A subjective appraisal: This picture is full of symbolism. The cow,
representing the Completed Testament Age, is leading the sheep and shepherd
into the light from the relative gloom created by the trees. The shepherd
is not in the gloom becauise he is lost but because he wants to ensure
that all the sheep will follow into the light. The title of the picture
is a reflection on we, who have lost the shepherd! in the age of ideological
chaos in which we are living.
The brushwork is carefully done and the colours, although sombre, are
relieved by the central patch of light shining through the gaps in the
branches overhead. It is early morning and the animals are going to pasture.
The picture is one of hope because we know that the gloom will become dispelled
completely as the day develops. |
