Erhardt Kurella started painting about 20 years
ago. He had become inspired by Vincent van Gogh who also started to paint
late in life. Erhardt was also impressed by van Gogh's motivation to paint
which was to bring brightness and joy to the walls of humble workers. He
was impressed too with the beautiful letters that he exchanged with his
brother.
When Erhardt started to paint he wanted to catch the internal feeling of the place he was in. He recalled that one of the first subjects that he painted was of an overgrown garden in summer. He went to the densest part of the garden near a stone wall where a lot of nettles were growing. He recalled that it was very hot and sticky with a lot of flies buzzing around and yet he became absorbed and stayed in the same spot until there was no more light to paint by. Still he paints with the desire to catch the feeling of the place and so, although his pictures seem to be roughly painted, after living with them for a while the sense of being there will come to the beholder. Because of this the paintings can help to change the atmosphere of the place where they are hung and bring an attitude of calmness and purity. |
